The Shins – The Rifle’s Spiral

“The Rifle’s Spiral” is the opening track of “Port Morrow”, the latest album from The Shins, which I spoke earlier here.

The video was directed by Jamie Caliri using the technique of stop-motion animation. The film mixes traditional puppet animation with 2D paper hinged animation. Shot with the Canon 5D, and 7D and 60D using Dragonframe software. For moving shots used a rig called the Volo by ARC Motion Control. Also used a nice camera slider by Dito Gear.

Three sinister gentlemen, a magician and an enormous rabbit populate the fantastical landscape of Emmy-winning director Jamie Caliri’s video for “The Rifle’s Spiral”. Caliri had free rein to let his imagination run wild, resulting in a surreal stop-motion animation. “I have always loved Edward Gorey’s illustration work and his influence is apparent throughout the video”, says Caliri. “Also, seeing Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” three times subconsciously veered my thoughts onto the magic theme”.

The video can also enjoy 3D in Nintendo 3DS through Nintendo Video.
